September 5, 2011 – Ajapnyak (Davtashen), Week 6
Attributes of Light
I had an experience (which should be a more frequent occurrence) this week, which really made a big impression on.
I think it started with us praying for a family who is struggling spiritually.
We went over to their home ready to talk about a specific gospel principle. When we arrived and began to talk I felt that we should not do what we planned on. So as I pondered what we should talk about scripture came to my mind. It was Moroni chapter 7. As I was opening my book, Elder Peterson(we were on exchanges) opened his book, Elder Peterson started talking about Charity and asked them to read verse 45-48 in that chapter. We had a great lesson on charity. It flowed. We taught clearly and the spirit was testifying to them that what we were saying was true. Afterwards Elder Peterson turned to me and said, ,”Do you realize what just happened”. I said , “Ya, that was great, the spirit was there, they felt it.” He said, “No. I didn’t have any idea what you wanted to talk about; all I knew was that we needed to talk about charity” I explained that I tried to think of other topics, but everything just seemed so blurry. The only thing that was in my mind was that chapter”
Elder Peterson and I were humbled that God loved that family, and trusted us enough to send us such clear direction and instructions. I know that God loves us. That love is real. It is also the most powerful force in the universe.
I don’t want to be what some people might call “preachy”. But I feel that the following is not me “preaching”, rather it is a thought that I want to share about light and dark.
I have been seeing so much of Satan’s sly, hidden, depressing hand creep into my thoughts and so I reverted to one of the most important things that we have. That is the perspective of a Loving God, Eternal Life.
39 Yea, and I also exhort you, my brethren, that ye be watchful unto prayer continually, that ye may not be led away by the temptations of the devil, that he may not overpower you, that ye may not become his subjects at the last day; for behold, he rewardeth you no good thing.
We can tell that we have truly accepted certain principles of light when we are happy, hopeful, uplifted, grateful and desire the welfare of others above our own. We can tell that light has filled us when we patiently and hopefully endure our trials. We can tell that darkness has crept into our lives as it too often and naturally does, when we are sad, angry, jealous, irritated, doubtful, confused or stressed.
If darkness has taken root we need find out how. If we continue to let darkness affect our thoughts, feelings and desires, we will begin to lose the perspective that we once had. We will sink deeper into despair.
The following are some things that I have come to know for myself are true and should not be dwelt on, rather they can be lightly reviewed in order to analyze some source of darkness
- Satan doesn’t need us to spend our time vandalizing, stealing, or killing. All he wants is that we lie a little, cheat a little, easily anger and/or envy others.
- Satan doesn’t need us to deny God’s Power or Christ’s Sacrifice. All he needs is for us to pass prideful judge upon others.
- Satan doesn’t need us to deny the Holy Ghost, the promised Comforter. All he needs us to do is to stop partaking of the Sacrament each week, and stop repenting daily.
- Satan doesn’t need us to deny Christ’s divine mission and suffering in Gethsemane. All we need to do is hold a grudge against someone. We just need to stop forgive others.
- Satan doesn’t need us to be disobedient to win us over. He only wants to make us forget why we are being obedient.
- Satan doesn’t need us to be “bad people” to win; he only needs us to leave our responsibilities undone.
- He doesn’t need us to disbelieve God or his Word. We just need to forget to pray.
- He doesn’t need us to worship false idols. He just wants us to become so busy that we don’t have time to read the Scriptures.
A majority of Satan’s work is to not in convincing a person to do horrible things. He has mastered the art and spends a large amount of effort to cause us to forget what we have received and learned from God. If we forget those things we will surely be filled with the darkness of despair and doubt.
We obtain light when we are ready for that light and when we do that which God has asked us to do. We usually feel this light as some type of energy that fills our bodies. Inspired thoughts are a result of these principles of light. Often times we don’t recognize the affects of the light. God does not ask us to do things that have little or no importance. He asks us to do that which brings his indescribable peace and happiness, in other words that which increases the measure of light.
We receive light when we (not in a specific order):
1. Read the Scriptures
2 Nephi 32
2. Love and serve others.
3. Keep God’s Commandments
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
41 And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and ahappy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are bblessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out cfaithful to the end they are received into dheaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
4. Pray in such a way that we receive answers to our questions.
2 Nephi 32
9 But behold, I say unto you that ye must apray always, and not faint; that ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall bpray unto the Father in the cname of Christ, that he will dconsecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the ewelfare of thy soul.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would aask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not btrue; and if ye shall ask with a csincere heart, with dreal intent, having efaith in Christ, he will fmanifest the gtruth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5. Forgive others
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do…
6. Partake of the Sacrament
3 Nephi 27
19 And ano unclean thing can enter into his kingdom; therefore nothing entereth into his brest save it be those who have cwashed their garments in my blood, because of their faith, and the repentance of all their sins, and their faithfulness unto the end.
15 And it came to pass that they did repent, and inasmuch as they did repent they did begin to prosper.
I love you all, I hope that this has helped in some way. I pray that it does.
